Mount Shasta Rotary Club Scholarships 2019
The Mount Shasta Rotary Club is currently accepting applications for three $2,500 scholarships, two Mount Shasta Rotary/Gino Marconi Scholarships and one Mount Shasta Rotary/Robert Krausse Scholarship, from graduating, local high school seniors. The entire amount will be awarded the first semester/quarter of higher education.
Criteria
Scholarship award decisions are based on an application process and criteria as follows. A student in good standing attending a high school in Mount Shasta or McCloud with a minimum GPA of 3.5 is needed to qualify for the scholarship. Afterwards, the selection criteria emphasizes community service, leadership and extracurricular activities. Financial need will serve as a tiebreaker in the decision. The Rotary Club will also ask that any recipient who finds he or she has received other support to the extent that this scholarship isn’t needed will return the award. An alternate student will be selected for this purpose. If a recipient doesn’t need the Rotary scholarship because of other support or by virtue of decision not to pursue higher education, this scholarship will be awarded to the designated alternate.
Some questions have been raised about the selection criteria. Is one scholarship reserved for outstanding male student and another for outstanding female student? No. Gender is not an award criterion. Is one scholarship reserved for the class valedictorian? No. Academic achievement is an important consideration in scholarship award, but the other criteria (listed above) are also part of the decision process.

Rotary scholarship award process includes the following steps:
- Applications are available from the Mt Shasta Rotary website at www.mtshastarotary.org, or at Mount Shasta High School. Applications must include the following:
- High school transcript.
- Proof of acceptance to an accredited institution of higher education. (If you do not yet have this information, it may be submitted by May 1st.)
- Four letters of recommendation including 2 from teachers, 1 from the principal, 1 from someone in the community (not school related). Please ask that letters include information regarding citizenship, character, and leadership.
- Copy of your Student Aid Report is not required but should be available upon request if there is a tie.
- Students must submit completed application and all attachments by email to [email protected] or to Mrs. Porteous at Mount Shasta High School by Tuesday, April 9, 2019.
- Late applications will not be considered.
- Rotary Committee reviews applications. (No member of Mt. Shasta Rotary who has a son or daughter applying for this scholarship will participate in the selection process.)
- Committee may interview applicants or finalists.
- Rotary announces scholarship recipients and alternate at MSHS Awards Night or other appropriate venue.
